Austria has deep roots and excellent historically grown relations with the Danube region. Therefore the BMWFW has been playing a very active role in supporting the integration of East and South East European countries into the ERA and in assisting the building up of sustainable structures to increase their successful participation in the EU-FPs. The BMWFW is an experienced partner for the political dialogue on S&T on a bilateral, regional as well as European level. Together with the EC, the Austrian EU Council Presidency launched the Steering Platform on Research for the Western Balkan Countries in 2006. This Platform emerged as an important interregional S&T dialogue forum over the past years. It is supported by WP1 of WBC-INCO.NET which has been led by the BMWFW. Beyond this, the BMWFW was deeply involved in the SEE-ERA.NET (South East European ERA.NET) project, which turned out to be a very important tool for fostering research cooperation with the region, and it substantially contributes the follow-up project SEE-ERA.NET PLUS. Apart from the above mentioned ERA- and INCO-NET projects the BMWFW is currently participating in the KORANET (Korea), ERA-NET New Indigo (India), ERA.NET RUS (Russian Federation), ERAfrica (Africa) and SEA-EU-NET (South East Asia).
