The University of Montenegro was founded on 29 April 1974. when three faculties (Faculty of Economics, of Engineering and the Faculty of Law from Titograd), two colleges (Teaching College and Maritime Studies College) and three independent scientific institutes (for History, for Agriculture and for Biological and Medical Research), signed an Agreement on Association into the University in Titograd. A year after it was founded, it changed its name into the University ”Veljko Vlahović”, and since 1992 it has its present name.

Today the University of Montenegro is situated in ten Montenegrin towns: Podgorica, Nikšic, Cetinje, Kotor, Herceg Novi, Bar, Bijelo Polje, Budva, Pljevlja and Berane and includes 20 faculties, three institutes and two independent study programmes.

International Cooperation: Directly or over its units the University of Montenegro cooperates with numerous scientific and educational institutions in the country and abroad. Cooperation with foreign institutions is realized through direct accession to numerous international university associations and networks, as well as through bilateral agreements. The University of Montenegro has signed agreements on cooperation with the following universities: University in Bari, University “La Sapienza” in Rome, University in Foggia, Warsaw University – Poland, Moscow State University – Russia, University of Shkodra – Albania, University in Bremen – Germany, University in Oslo – Norway, University in Bergen – Norway, University in Tour – France, University in Bratislava – Slovak Republic, University in Granada – Spain and University “Charles Sturt” – Australia.

Since 2002 a number of projects are being realized at the University of Montenegro within the European Union programmes: TEMPUS, SOCRATES, ERASMUS-MUNDUS. The University of Montenegro cooperates with UNESCO, Council of Europe, American Councils, WUS-Austria, British Council, etc.
